Rachel (Angon) Viramontes, President Wednesday Club – happy childhood in San Pedro
Rachel was born in 1941 at Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles and immediately brought to San Pedro where she grew up in the loving home of her maternal grand parents. She adored her grandfather and tells the story of when she was only three years following him and then stranded at Gaffey St. corner and the Police rescued her. She vividly recounts many stories of the fun and innocence of her youth.
Rachel has lived in SP all her life except the @two years she was away when her husband Bill was in military service. She attended Barton Hill and Holy Trinity Elementary Schools, then Mary Star of the Sea High School (class of 1959. She attended Nurses Training Institute in Long Beach for a year until the school closed.then transferred to Los Angeles Harbor College. While attending Harbor College she began working part-time in the Business Office at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital where she worked the next 25 years. She and Bill have four children. Over the years she because active community advocate and particularly important is her effort for the Bandini Canyon Trail Park that took several years working with Department of Recreation & Parks. Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative (LANI) and Council District 15.
She joined the San Pedro Wednesday (Senior) Club (WC) in 2005and in 2008 was elected President and currently still servea as President. She helped guide the growth of membership from approximately one hundred to current cap of four hundred. The WC is highly active in supporting the Community and they have many fun activities including day trips, and lectures.
In 2024 as a representative of the San Pedro Service Center, she was an honoree designated by by County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, Aging & Disabilities Department & Commission for Older Adults 59th Annual Recognition Day as part of County Supervisor Janice Hahn’s District 4.
Rachel and her husband – so loving and genuine – enjoy travel, dining, games and family. More stories to come.
