SOLAHA Vol. V, No. 16 – Tahia Hayslet,

Executive director of Harbor Interfaith (HIS) in San Pedro tells the story of how her agency was able to save the life of a mom and her family as just one example of support and unity in the town.

Tahia joined HIS in 1998 as founding director of the agency Accelerated Learning & Living Transitional Housing program. Before being promoted to the top position in 2004, she served as program director of the agency 90 day family shelter, 18 month transitional housing program and family resource center. HIS has thirteen programs and a budget of $14 million and helps over 8,000 households with close to 17,000 service contacts.

HIS mission is to empower the homeless and working poor to achieve self-sufficiency by providing support services including shelter, transitional housing, food, job placement, advocacy, childcare, education and life-skills training within the South Bay communities. Thanks to Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn the HIS recently expanded their benevolent services to manage “transitional housing” facility in the former public health building at 8th& Beacon Streets in San Pedro and continues their remarkable good work helping people in need.

With a master’s degree in behavioral sciences from Cal State Dominguez Hills and Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justiceminor in gerontology) shealso attended Wells Fargo New Executive Director Institute and the Stanford University Nonprofit Executive Leadership program.

Born and raised in Lynwood, California, Tahia is happily married with two adult children and resides in Long Beach, California
