We are sad to reveal that one of our SOLAHA storytellers, Dr. John Goode, D.D.S. passed way February 25 at age 95.
In his honor of Dr. Goode and this weekend’s Master’s Golf Tournament we bring you his story of joining the San Pedro (SP) Kiwanis and later. when he became president of the service club starting the SP Golf Tournament that took place for many years, dubbed the SP Golf Championship. He speaks about the legendary Hacienda Hotel designed by eminent Mid-Century Modern architect Richard Neutra;, great view, Polynesian Swim Club and the piano probably played by father of another SOALAHA storyteller Mona Dallas Reddick (Vol. I) president of the SP Bay Historical Society.
Dr. Goode was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1929. He graduated from University of Michigan (B.A.) and University of Iowa for dentistry and specialty in orthodontics.
After serving U.S.A .Army Dental Corps (1955-57) he moved to California to open private practice in orthodontics (1960) from which he retired 2007.
He and his late wife Lydia (married over 50 years) loved living in San Pedro/Peninsula area where they raised their family.
Dr. Goode was very active in the community: Kiwanis Club (President 1965); San Pedro Art Association (President 1953); San Pedro Chamber of Commerce (Director, 1962). Along with other professional colleagues he founded the SP Dental Association that met for many years at Ante’s restaurant to discuss their profession, current events, local interests. He was also active in: Southern California Dental Golf Association (President,1970); Los Verdes Men’s Golf Club (President, 1957); Rolling Hills Country Club (Director, 1974). His wife was active in The Assistance League (Weymouth Corners). Other interests include travel, skiing, music, tennis, art, fitness.
He lived for many years at Palos Verdes Shores (mobile l homes) South Shores, SP, and played golf daily at their nine hole golf course.
Many children, now adults,, their progeny and others owe him much for their beaming smiles!
